"Slow down and build capability first." What this means for a small to medium business.
The big AI companies have started saying it, and it is being repeated as if it were a warning. Here is what is being said, what it means for a business your size, and the two things to do with it this month.
What is being said
Several of the large AI providers, and a growing number of consultants, are telling businesses to slow their AI rollouts and invest in "capability" first: skills, data quality, governance, the boring foundations. It is being reported as a change of heart. It is closer to a change of customer. The early buyers were enthusiasts. The next buyers are the businesses that got burned by a chatbot that made things up, and the providers are adjusting the pitch.
What it actually means
Strip the language and it is three claims. AI produces plausible output, not correct output, so someone has to be able to check it. AI reads whatever information you give it, so the information has to be sorted and safe first. And AI inside a messy process makes the mess faster, so the process has to be understood before the tool goes in.
None of that is new. It is the same advice given to any business adopting any system for thirty years. What is new is that the people selling the tools are now saying it out loud.
What it means for a business your size
It does not mean stop. A small to medium business does not need a capability programme. It needs three things a large organisation would call capability and you would call Tuesday: the team knows which information can go into which tool, one person checks anything an AI produced before it goes to a client, and there is a written page saying so. That is the whole of "build capability first" at your scale, and it is a weekend, not a project.
Two things to do with it this month
- Sort your information into the four buckets and your tools into the four tiers. The page is here.
- Name the checker. For every place AI drafts something that reaches a client, name the person who reads it first. Write their name next to the tool.
Then keep going. The businesses that win with AI are not the fastest movers. They are the ones that built the ground first, and at your size the ground takes a weekend.
The one thing to do next
